How Do I Begin with PPC Marketing?

By Lisa Paolo

The best online resource for Pay Per Click Marketing begins at www.adwords.google.com.   As of May 2009 the three largest players in the market are Google, Yahoo, and MSN Live Search.  Google is the first source to get started because they pull in about 75% of the PPC market for internet advertising.  If you are new to PPC, then the videos will be perfect to get you started and explain all about pay per click advertising.  Intermediate and advanced users might find the videos a little redundant and slow, but you can easily skip over the parts you already know.

There are nine different sections in the Google Adwords Learning Center.  The lessons come in multimedia and text.  The same material is covered in both types of lessons.  The videos last anywhere from 1 – 15 minutes.  The text lessons are available in a few different languages where as the multimedia lessons are only available in English.  It depends on your learning style as well.  Some learners like to have text in their hand to highlight and refer to, while others learn better by seeing examples done for them in videos and graphics.

When you have reviewed all of the lessons, it is time to start to set up your first campaign.  When you log into www.adwords.google.com you can begin to set up your account by pressing the Start Here button in the upper right hand corner, just below the language selection.  Google will walk you through step by step and answer all your questions along the way.  Make sure to check your ad campaign about 1-2 hours after you set it up.  You want to make sure your ads are running and are not costing you too much money with no customers coming into your site.  I recommend you check your ads daily for at least the first week.  This will help you fine tune any changes you want to make to your campaign.  It will also help you keep an eye on how much you are spending each day.  You can always lower your daily budget or cost per click.

Once you feel like you have a handle on setting up a Google campaign, the keywords you select and ads you write can be easily transferred to Yahoo and MSN – Live Search.  I recommend using all three sites because you will still get at least 25% of your customers from Yahoo and MSN.  You can always hire someone to start, set up and/or maintain your PPC sites.  Prices range from $150-$500 for the set up of a PPC campaign and maintenance runs anywhere from $50-$250 per month.  This is all in addition to what you want to spend on clicks for your PPC campaign.  These are just some ideas to keep in mind when setting a budget for your internet advertising.
