A Fragrance Review of Fancy by Jessica Simpson

By Lawrence Johnson, Jr.

I am a perfume snob. For those of you who are shocked by this statement, I will repeat this sentence – I AM A PERFUME SNOB. Whenever I sniff Jessica Simpson's newest fragrance, Fancy, I know it is not my cup of tea. I prefer perfumes and colognes that remind me of complex, thinking adults. When I experience a new fragrance, it needs to give me visions of Frida Kahlo's art, Frank Lloyd Wrights' buildings or Toni Morrison's novels. In other words, I must have an intellectual experience with a new scent for me to like it. Fancy reminds me of a pop music loving teenage girl who loves to pop her Bubbalicious gum. This fragrance is definitely for the girl next door. I think Jessica Simpson and her perfumer have this type of woman in mind, very young and very pretty, for Fancy.

“With Fancy, I wanted to create a pretty fragrance, one that I could be just as comfortable wearing on the red carpet or every day with my favorite jeans,” says Jessica Simpson. She also mentions that it is “a unique fragrance – personal, whimsical, playful and romantic . . . Fancy is just that: Fancy.” This sweet fragrance begins with apricot nectar and sparkling pear. Its heart is dewy gardenia, toasted almond and night blooming jasmine. Fancy's lingering scent is sandalwood, amber crystals and vanilla crème. The fragrance's juice is the color of blush champagne, the color of youthful young women.

The Fancy bottle interprets Ms. Simpson's favorite vintage perfume bottles. It is inspired “by the romance of all things vintage but always very modern and of the moment” according to the perfume's publicist.

Fancy's collection is a 3.4 oz Eau de Parfum Spray for $59.00, a 1.7 oz Eau de Parfum Spray for $49.00 and a 6 oz Body Lotion for $30. It is available at major department stores and online perfumeries. I recommend Fancy for teenage girls and women in their early twenties.
