THE INTREPID TRAVELS and MUSINGS OF THE ITINERANT CEO

I confess that I have been for much of my life interested and drawn by politics and politicians.  I truly enjoy the machinations of politicians as they fully espouse their stated intentions of “America First” coupled with their seeming desire to “Fully represent their Constituency” and in essence to “do that which is right and just.”  I truly enjoy watching as they bob and weave in their continuous efforts to get re-elected that they might continue in their endless and tireless efforts on our behalf.  I have been a middle of the road when asked to declare my political beliefs however somehow I have changed my perspective.  Yes, I am becoming a hard right wing constituent.  

 

Our American dream was founded on basic concepts.  If you don’t believe me read two of the most famous documents ever created in the history of mankind.  They are the American Declaration of Independence and The United States Constitution.  The preamble to the Declaration of Independence is simple and direct: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  The preamble to The Constitution of the United States follows in the same vain: “We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general Welfare and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America”.  These two documents are unquestionably some of the most eloquent words ever written.  And these two documents have been over the years in various forms copied, translated and viewed with true jealousy by others for not having thought of and enacted upon these words first.

 

However, we as a country have lost our way.  We have become mired in a sea of selfishness, thoughtlessness, abuse of power and mismanagement.  We are becoming slowly but steadily surrounded by conduct that if not criminal is so borderline in nature that the actions teeter on the edge of criminality.  The basic misconduct has become intertwined between politician, businessman, educator, legal, police power, and the military to mention a few.     

 

This country was established as a democratic republic.  Simply put this means that the “We the People” as written into The United States Constitution are you and I.  We as the democratic republic (and remember that we are the constituency) vote for our elected representatives.  Not the other way around.  Think about that statement for a moment.  Somehow we as the constituency and more significantly our elected officials have forgotten the meaning of elected representation.  Established in this country is now the “Regal Positioning” of the elected officials.  We refer to the Kennedy Dynasty, the Clinton Dynasty, the Bush Dynasty, and the potential Obama Dynasty.  Further this list grows within states and local governments.  Thus with an imperious wave of a “regal hand” a politician can literally doom a person, business or a project.  Hence We the People now seemingly duck in fear to avoid the politician’s wrath and what it may bring.  This ugly concept brings back other times and places such as: Ancient Rome, Russia under the Czars, modern Russia under the communist regime and the new current regime, Hitler’s Germany, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Libya just to name a few.  Should you cross the politicians in power you were food for the lions, subject to the concentration camps, all of the potential atrocities, execution, and imprisonment.  In sum, I feel we are but a few short steps away.

 

If we look at Chicago, present day you get a feel for precisely of what I am discussing.  We have the patronage system that is so deeply ingrained in Chicago that the vaunted University of Illinois is under investigation for a freshman appointment system for non - qualifying students.  The governor of Illinois has been removed from office and facing federal charges.  Meanwhile the former governor’s wife will be appearing on national television for a reality show.  She has to make money to defend the former governor.  The Mayor of Chicago is now being questioned for issues including but not limited to the $1.1Billion parking meter fiasco not to mention the 2016 Olympics.  Last time I checked it cost money to host the Olympics.  Since the city of Chicago is for all intensive purposes broke and cannot afford adequate police protection how then can we support the 2016 Olympics?  And on the list goes. 

 

The answers to the above statements and questions that I have just poised are really quite simple.  This represents personal aggrandizement.  Politicians worry about their “legacy.”  What happened to their constituency they were elected to represent?  I for one do not want to be famous, they erect statues in your honor, after you are dead, and well you know what birds do.  Perhaps this is apropos!  

 

We look at the business system in the United States and are inundated with daily updates of which companies have filed bankruptcy.  General Motors, once the greatest corporation in the United States and for that matter the world is now in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  The unions coupled with the GMC management have mismanaged the business to such an extent that GM is no longer listed longer on the Dow.  Top management demanded their huge salaries and the unions demanded a job banks program to enable “job searches” and the payment that went with it. 

 

I recently a small article buried in the back of the business section of the Chicago Tribune.  The gist of the article was simple, a small bank received TARP funding.  The bank essentially was in okay shape despite some bad loans.  The CEO announced they were in no hurry to repay the TARP funding.  Why?  Because the money received from the U.S. Government (that is taxpayer’s money) is a source of free money.  Therefore they will take their time in repaying the monies received.  There is at this point no public outcry and for that matter no one really took notice because the millions of dollars obtained were inconsequential in the entire scheme of things.  Needless to write this represents a sad state of affairs. 

 

We read about detainees held at Guantanamo bay, Cuba in the interests of “National Security.”  I do not question national security in fact far be it for me to do so.  Without question we as a nation are at war with terrorism and undoubtedly some perhaps all of those held in Guantanamo are terrorists.  The point however remains that we as a country must follow the “Rule of Law.”  The precise definition of the “Rule of Law” as spelled out in Black’s Law Dictionary 6th Edition is:

….decisions should be made by the application of known principles or laws without the intervention of discretion in their application.”

Simply put, one cannot apply one meaning to the law and enforce as seen fit and then alter the meaning and enforcement for another purpose.  In essence therefore there must be uniformity in enforcement.  Hence Amendment VI of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial.  Somehow our governmental officials have forgotten this part, using the excuse of the “war against terrorism.”  As I wrote earlier I do not question our country’s right to protect itself what I question is why we are deviating from the established Rule of Law.  The very same words that have been bandied about by many governmental officials, in sum hiding behind the words to create excuses for our illegal activities.  In sum our politicians have violated the VI
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the very same Constitution they are sworn to uphold and protect!    

 

As I see the situation, We the People are subjugated to the politicians and the “Regal We.”  We the People are forced to witness and suffer while federal, state and local governments run themselves like a feudal system of political favoritism.  We the People are forced to bail out businesses that have taken for years, ruined their businesses, and are now dependent upon us to save them (the business management excuse -  we are taxpayers too).  The solution, you might ask is not simple.  However let us start with a few simplistic ideas:

 

·       Term limits for all politicians not just the President of the United States

·       Limit campaign spending

·       Make the impeachment process easier and applicable to all elected positions with stiff penalties

·       If you do not have money don’t spend it

·       Moratoriums (perhaps permanent) on self aggrandizing projects like the 2016 Olympics

·       Eliminate government bailouts – you business ruined it - you fix it

 

This is the start of a tough approach however the alternative is something that goes against the very grain of American society.  If you don’t believe me read Karl Marx!
