Barbara Payne is a professional copywriter and marketing consultant who has worked for clients as diverse as the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Eaton Corporation, Microsoft, and dozens of small to medium-size businesses and independent professionals. She helps companies identify their True Voice and use it with cutting-edge technologies to build presence in the marketplace and attract loyal, profitable customers.

She spent six years as manager of marketing communications at TMW Systems, Inc., the premier provider of mission-critical software for the trucking and logistics industry. There she was responsible for an extensive program of communications, including a monthly single-page newsletter and a quarterly 8-page booklet edition of the newsletter. She had full charge for creating the annual 40-plus-page magazine for which she interviewed and ghost-wrote for internal executives, worked closely with internal technical specialists to interpret complex details of the various software modules and convert the information into simple value-oriented language for the largely non-technical customer and prospect base.

Barbara is an expert at interviewing customers and vendors and creating articles and stories that showcase their expertise with a view to strengthening customer and prospect relations as well as affording customers valuable exposure in the industry. She has had complete responsibility for quarterly and annual newsletters/magazine that served as a sales force’s most powerful sales tools.

During her tenure at TMW Barbara also completely revamped the company’s original out-of-date website and turned it into one of the most effective sales channels—a full 25% of all sales leads came from the website—and those had the highest conversion rates of any leads.

Barbara served on the Board of The Northeast Ohio Direct Marketing Association (NODMA), and has been a member of several professional associations including the Society for Professional Journalists, the Association of Internet Web Professionals. She is active with the Chicago chapter of the National Association for Women Business Owners (NAWBO), and the Independent Professionals Group – IPG Cleveland.

Barbara is a co-author of “Create the Business Breakthrough You Want: Secrets and Strategies from the World’s Greatest Mentors.” (Mission Publishing, CA: Frank J. Fabozzi Associates, 2005). She speaks and presents on the topics of powerful business writing and using blogs effectively for business. She has taught Writing for the Web at Cleveland State University’s continuing professional education division. Barbara is quoted in the press on the subjects of newsletters and business blogs in such national publications as the Gannett and Knight-Ridder newspaper syndicates, and in local papers like the Willoughby News Herald.

Barbara is also actively involved with an online association, the Single Working Women’s Affiliate Network (SWWAN). www.swwan.org/
