BIOGRAPHY FOR NAN AVANT AND PROMO MATERIAL FOR FILM

 

Seattle composer Nan Avant has been composing music since the age of 17.  Her film credits include film shorts, The Library, Rocketman, Murder (an animation film), Twenty Dollar Bill, Mindgame, Mr. Chatterbox, a feature length documentary, Postcards from Tora Bora and Unremembered, a feature length suspense drama in post-production. Various works include music for symphonic wind ensemble, string quartet, voice, violin, flute and piano as well as orchestral arrangements.

 

Avant received a BFA in Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts).  She has studied orchestration and composition at Seattle Pacific University and is a graduate of the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program under the direction of Hollywood composer and two-time Emmy Award Winner Hummie Mann.

 

Avant is member of ASCAP, IFP Seattle, IFP New York, Women in Film/Seattle, Northwest Film Forum and Seattle Composers Alliance.

 

 

Ms. Avant lives in Seattle with her husband Walt and family pets.

 

 

WORLD PREMIER TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL 2007

 

Seattle Composer, Nan Avant, has composed original music for the documentary

feature film, Postcards from Tora Bora. This documentary, by New York directors

Wazhmah Osman and Kelly Dolak, had it's World Premier at New York's

Tribeca Film Festival 2007 on April  26th.

 

 

Postcards from Tora Bora documents the personal journey by co-director Osman as

she travels back to Afghanistan to find her father and search for her past.

After the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Osmon’s family took flight from Afghanistan to America, taking with them only a handful of photos and movies as

reminders of the lives they left behind. Now she returns home to search for her past and her father, who never left the country. Her quest reveals the history

of this war-torn country in this personal film that is full of personality. It is a compelling personal narrative with layers of meaning. In English and Farsi.

Directed by Wazhmah Osman and Kelly Dolak. Editing by Stephen Jablonsky. Original music composed by Nan Avant, Seattle composer and musician.

 

 

The soundtrack includes original ambient textured music created  by Ms. Avant as

well as Afghan music by middle eastern musicians.
